So.......Joseph's T-Cells went up overnight and were around 80. Dr. Ringewald said that was very possible and he might expect it to do that. They want it to be below 25. Joseph will start another round of Thymoglobulin later today so we know we'll be here for at least one more night. That's fine by us considering we thought we'd be here for at least another week! They will test his counts in the morning and make a plan from there. We just can't believe how far we've come in such a short time. What a roller coaster ride. It was very reminiscent of two years ago, but this time I think we were more comfortable with the whole process. Joseph was alert and commuinicating this time which made things more bearable as well. We are hopeful that we can keep Joseph infection free during the next few months. Frequent handwashing, staying away from anyone with illness, and staying away from crowded places are once again Dr.'s orders. We are old pros at that anyway so it won't be too difficult. - My name is Angela. I'd like to tell you about our sweet,brave little warrior who came face to face with a giant and won. This is his story. Five year old Joseph Greenwood received a Heart Transplant at the Medical University of SC, five days before his 6th birthday. This all started in March of 2006, with a virus that caused Joseph (JoJo) to have a high-grade fever. The virus invaded and damaged his heart. Joseph was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy, a rare weakening of the heart muscles. This eventually led JoJo to a long admission at MUSC in August 2006, with the implantation of an internal defibrillator. On March 24, 2007 the defibrillator discharged appropriately and saved his life when Joseph collapsed on the family porch in Florence, SC. His father, Stephen, successfully performed CPR on JoJo. Within 3 hours JoJo was airlifted to MUSC. On March 25, 2007, Joseph was placed on a life saving heart and lung bypass machine (ECMO). Joseph was placed on the Heart Transplant list on March 26, 2007. On April 4, 2007 Joseph was the first child in SC to receive the Berlin Heart Pump. Joseph underwent a heart transplant on April 13, 2007.
